Frank Sidney Robinson's Obituary
Frank Sidney Robinson, 83, passed peacefully at home leaving behind a life defined by independence, curiosity, and a quiet but unmistakable strength.
Born in Jackson, Mississippi on November 22, 1942, to Otis and Jennie Mae Robinson, Frank was the youngest of five brothers. Though the baby of the family, he was never one to follow anyone's lead. He regularly outplayed his brothers on the golf course and charted his own path in every corner of his life.
A gifted student and natural leader, Frank served as president of his high school science club. His love of learning never faded; he remained a lifelong student of the world. One of his favorite rituals was watching Jeopardy and confidently answering the clues from his chair.
Frank believed in hard work and staying busy-at one point he held five jobs simultaneously. His joining the Army was unforeseen and hasty-he went to the airport to sign up and was immediately placed on a plane to boot camp that day. During his service, he competed in and won the U.S. Armed Forces Command-Europe golf tournament, becoming the first African American to earn that title.
Golf was one of Frank's greatest passions and certainly one of his superpowers. After the family moved to Mobile Avenue, he and his brothers built a three-hole course in their yard and often snuck onto the local course at night to play. His talent was widely known; even professional golfer Pete Brown refused to give Frank a handicap.
Frank's church home was Greater Fairview Missionary Baptist Church where he served as an usher.
Frank married Sarah Hulitt in 1966 and had a son, Michael Dante Robinson. Не later married Maxine Dowsing and welcomed Kevin and Christopher into his life. His family was his pride, and he loved them with a steady, unwavering devotion.
Frank loved to laugh, and he loved to make others laugh. Frank's life was rich with stories, accomplishments, and the kind of moments that revealed a person's true character. He will be remembered for his independence, his humor, his brilliance, and the unmistakable talent and the joy found in the game of golf.
He is survived by his son, Michael Dante Robinson and stepson Robert (Chris) Dowsing; brother Larry Robinson; and nephew and nieces, Michael T. Robinson, Loretta Williams (Paul, Tanya Robinson, Karen Robinson-Ogbebor (Theo), Samantha Robinson, and Theresa Diggs.
