John Wesley Hodge Sr.'s Obituary
Deacon John Wesley Hodge, Sr. was born on September 19, 1941, in Pocahontas, Mississippi, to the late Lenwood D. Hodge, Sr. and Ura Lee Hearn Hodge. He was the fourth of eight children and was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Annette K. Hodge.
Deacon Hodge was educated in the Hinds County, Mississippi school system, attending Cedar Grove School and Sumner Hill. Though he labored in many occupations throughout his life, God placed a special calling on his heart to serve through driving, leading to faithful years of employment and retirement with BellSouth and Jackson Public Schools Transportation.
At an early age, Deacon Hodge accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and walked steadfastly in faith throughout his earthly journey. A devoted servant of God, he gave unselfishly of his time and talents to the church, serving diligently as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Brotherhood Leader, and as a faithful member of the Willing Workers Society. He also lifted his voice in praise as a member of both the Senior and Male Choirs. Deacon Hodge will be lovingly remembered for his angelic voice, which he used to proclaim the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through song, testimony, and encouragement throughout the community.
A loving and God-fearing husband and father, Deacon Hodge was united in holy matrimony to the late Pollie Ann Wells Hodge for 47 blessed years, and five children were born to this union. He later married Mary "Peggy" Hines Hodge, blending their families into one of love, faith, and unity with seven children. Those left to cherish his precious memory include Belvely McClendon (Ricky, Sr.), John Hodge, Jr., Cynthia Neal (Keith), Felix Hodge (Sandra), Patrick Hodge (LaDonna), Robert Hines, and Shantay Hines, all of whom will forever hold dear the lessons, love, and Godly example he shared.
In addition to his wife and children, Deacon Hodge leaves to rejoice in his life and legacy six siblings: Lee Hodge, Sr., Lenwood Hodge, Jr., LaJune McQuirter (James), Oliver Hodge, Sr. (Annie Marie), Melvin Hodge, I (Minnie), Archie Hodge, Sr. (Velma), two uncles, David Hearn, Sr., and Lawrence Hearn; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends.
