Laura Louise Derrick's Obituary
Laura Louise Derrick was born December 27, 1942, in Farmhaven, Mississippi. She was the 6th of 10 wonderful children born through the union of Samson and Aretha (RE) Derrick. Louise, as she was affectionately called, is preceded in death by two brothers, Samson Derrick and Lee Derrick; and five sisters, Mary Derrick, Ruby Wilson, Sadie Carr, Irene Derrick, and Clara Bagavoire.
Lead by the Holy Spirit, along with parental guidance, Laura accepted Christ and was baptized at the Old Truelight Missionary Baptist Church in Farmhaven (a rural community of Canton, Mississippi). Her early education was through the Madison County School System. The family relocated to Jackson where Laura pursued a higher education at lougaloo College, graduating from Alcorn State University with a degree in Early Childhood Education.
Laura's love for children allowed her to work at Durant Elementary School for many years, teaching 3rd and 4th graders. After retirement and with a loving heart, she became more focused on helping family and keeping up with her favorite 4-legged companion "CoCo".
Due to unforeseen events over the years, Laura's health and mobility slowly declined; however, she never lost her spirit. She continued to love and care for her family everyday of her life until God chose her to come home. Laura leaves to cherish her memories: her sister, Annie Derrick of Jackson, Mississippi; her brother, Howard Derrick (Maryam) of Flowood, Mississippi; a brother-in-law, John Bagavoire of Country Club Hills, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Debra Derrick of Jackson, Mississippi; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
