Sonya Ross' Obituary
With hearts full of love and gratitude, we honor the beautiful life and legacy of Sonya Ross, who transitioned to glory on May 6, 2025. She was born on June 1, 1971, in Jackson, Mississippi, to the late Pearl McLain and the late Roosevelt Winters.
Sonya Ross was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. She attended Provine High School and pursued higher education in Real Estate at Jackson State University. On March 28, 1989, she married Porter Ross, Jr., and their union was blessed with three sons.
She began her faith journey at Family Life Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Elder Herman Littleton, Sr., and received the Holy Ghost a few years later. During her time at Family Life, she faithfully served in the Sunday School Department and as the Vacation Bible School Coordinator. After the passing of Elder Herman Littleton, Sr. in 2007, Elder Daniel Littleton assumed leadership of the church, and at the start of 2008, relocated the members to Greater Deliverance Church of God in Christ. At Greater Deliverance, Sonya continued serving in the Sunday School Department and as the Vacation Bible School Coordinator, inspiring many young people through her creativity with arts and crafts. Additionally, she served faithfully in the Sunday morning breakfast ministry for the youth.
On October 3, 2021, she became the First Lady of Mars Hill Church of God in Christ when her husband, Elder Porter Ross, Jr., was appointed as Pastor. Shortly afterward, she was appointed to the Executive Board of District #12 Women's Department by District Missionary Rosie Harris.
She leaves behind cherished memories with her loving husband, Porter Ross, Jr.; three sons and one daughter-in-law-Jerron (Sheneice) Ross, Bryan Ross, and Sean Ross; and three grandchildren-Kalysia Ross, Javon Ross, and Ivy Ross. She was preceded in death by her mother and father.
